Artist statement:
Bloom is the last piece
made in the body of work I am currently involved in,
which is comprised of distorting similar shapes. This
work represents how one can become a part of something,
yet hold on to their individuality because of different
backgrounds or experiences. The shape of Bloom is
somewhat architectural and could easily fit into a
cityscape, which is why I chose to construct this
sculpture out of steel. The way the two structures of
this piece combined together and seem to flare out of
its base while twisting around each other gives the
piece a blooming effect. While constructing Bloom, and
the other pieces in this series, I left one side open so
that it could be filled with pieces of scrap metal used
by others. Because I used scrap metal not all the marks
made on this work were from the artist but also from
others. This means those who had worked the steel also
contributed by unintentionally dictating some of the
shapes in this work. Bloom, with its simplistic shape
made up of elegantly distorted triangles twisting around
each other with a variation of textures, seems to hold
up well as a conclusion to telling the story of this
body of work.
